Course Descriptions

Every student—and parent—wants to open the letter from their dream college that says, “Congratulations! You have been accepted into X University for fall semester of 20--.” Gaining admission to a preferred college depends to some extent on a student’s ability to write two key essays: the ACT Essay and the college application essay. In this ten-week summer course, Mrs. Rebecca Hope will teach high school students the fundamentals of vibrant and sophisticated sentences and paragraphs. She will then teach them the requirements for persuasive essays such as the ACT Essay exam. Students will learn the four domains these essays are scored on and what is needed to excel in each area. They will practice writing three essays and receive specific feedback on how to improve their scores. Finally, Mrs. Hope will help students understand what makes an attention-getting and engaging college application essay. Students will study successful essays from a variety of colleges and work on possible angles for their own essay. They will practice writing two different essays and receive individualized feedback on their work. Students who take this course will be better prepared to score high on the ACT essay exam and to gain positive reactions from college representatives who review applications. They’ll also receive excellent writing instruction that will help them in their schoolwork in high school, college, and career.
